Description

Birders are always looking for the best binoculars for bird watching. Vortex has a reputation for pushing the limits of optical performance, and the Razor HD series constitutes their top line binoculars. In 2013 the Cornell Lab of Ornithology rated the Vortex Razor HD (high definition) 10×42’s twin, the 8×42, as one of the four best bird watching binoculars in the $700 to $2,000 price range. During the last four years Vortex has continued to make improvements on this series. In his 2017 selection of the best birding binoculars, the “binoculars guy” (http://thebinocularsguy.com/best-birding-binoculars/) wrote “I rate Vortex as one of the best binocular brands, and the Razor HD 10×42 is one of my all-time favorite binoculars. He goes on to say, “The Razor HD is without a doubt the best birdwatching binocular for the money.” With a well-earned reputation for pushing the limits of optical performance, the Razor HDs step up and out on other binoculars in their class. Small, light, bright, strong, and packed with the best quality, hand-selected prisms and premium HD extra-low dispersion glass available today.

The Razor HD series is small, light, bright, strong, and packed with the best quality, hand-selected prisms and premium HD extra-low dispersion glass available today. The series’ apochromatic optical system combines with HD glass to provide unmatched color sharpness. Premium HD extra-low dispersion glass delivers the ultimate in resolution and color fidelity, resulting in high definition images. For maximum brightness, all air-to-glass surfaces receive multiple coatings of anti-reflective, premium proprietary coatings. These dielectric prism coated lenses deliver the highest level of light transmission, and provide bright, clear, color-accurate images. The resulting color fidelity and light transmission makes identification of distant large birds easy, and small birds possible.

The roof prisms of Vortex binoculars result in greater durability and a more compact size – certainly appreciated those who may spend a day with their birding binoculars hanging from their neck. The coatings have unparalleled durability, having been applied to the lenses by cutting edge plasma technology. The coatings on the roof prism models enhance resolution and contrast due to the phase correction that occurs.

These binoculars have true open hinges, which offer superior ergonomics while decreasing total weight and bulk. Weight is decreased by using magnesium chassis, which also increases unit strength.  O-ring seals are used to prevent moisture, dust, and debris from penetrating the chassis, which results is reliable performance in all environments. Purging with argon gas prevents internal fogging over a wide range of temperatures. A rubber armor on the exterior provides a secure, non-slip grip, and durable external protection. In addition, an ultra-hard, scratch-resistant coating protects exterior lenses from scratches, oil and dirt.

Finally, for convenience, the multi-position eyecups twist up and down to precise, intermediate settings to maximize custom fit for comfortable viewing with or without eyeglasses. A center focus wheel adjusts the focus of both binocular barrels at the same time. A locking diopter, which adjusts for differences in a user’s eyes, is located on right eyepiece. Importantly, the binocular is compatible with a tripod adapter, allowing use on a tripod or car window mount.

The designation, 10×42, means magnification is ten times and the objective lens diameter is 42 millimeters in diameter. Eye relief is 16.5 millimeters, and the exit pupil is 5.3 millimeters. The linear field of view is 362 feet at 1000 yards, and the angular field of view is 6.9 degrees. It will focus as near as six feet, almost arm length! Distance between exit pupils adjusts from 55 to 75 millimeters. The unit is 5.9 inches high and 5.1 inches wide, and it weighs 24.8 ounces. The product manual is downloadable as a PDF file.
